What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

The Traditional Chinese medical system is a dynamic system that has been practiced for over 2000 years. Its medical theory has been expanded and refined by countless practitioners. The records of their successes and failures have been meticulously documented and systematized for the use of future practitioners and the benefit of their patients.

According to Traditional Chinese Medical theory, the body will deviate from homeostasis due to a number of differing influences such as:

  1. Seasonal and extreme weather patterns

  2. Emotional upset and mental agitation

  3. Incompatible lifestyle and dietary choices

As the body deviates further from homeostasis, an array of symptoms will arise manifesting in any system of the body or mind creating a distinguishable illness.

Licensed Chinese Medical practitioners utilize many different diagnostic tools to determine a Pattern (synonymous with diagnosis). These diagnostic tools include:

  1. Inquiry about a patient’s presenting symptoms, past illnesses, and family history

  2. Palpation of the radial pulse of each wrist, the abdomen and along different meridian channels

  3. Observation of the tongue, face, ear, abdomen, and along different meridian channels

Once a Pattern is determined a licensed practitioner will treat using the following tools:

  1. Acupuncture Points

  2. Herbal Medicine

  3. Bodywork

  4. Dietary Therapy

  5. Lifestyle Modifications

Treatments are unique to each patient's needs, goals and presenting condition(s). Different tools are selected to help bring the body back to homeostasis. As homeostasis is reestablished, presenting symptoms will decrease and the body and mind will be restored to optimal health.
